Tip Calculator

Work out the tip on a bill, the total including tip, and how much each person owes if you're splitting it.

Enter your numbers

Tip amount$0.00
Total bill$0.00
Per person$0.00

How it's calculated

Tip = Bill × (tip% / 100) Total = Bill + Tip Per person = Total / number of people

What's a reasonable tip?

Tipping norms vary widely by country and even by service type. In the United States, 15–20% is typical for sit-down restaurant service; many other countries don't expect tipping at all, or round up modestly instead. Adjust the percentage field to match local convention.

Splitting fairly

This calculator splits the total evenly across everyone in the group. If people ordered very different amounts, a fairer approach is to calculate each person's share of the pre-tip bill separately and apply the tip percentage to each share individually.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Frequently asked questions

Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?

Conventions differ; many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the post-tax total is also common and usually only a small difference either way — enter whichever amount your bill's convention suggests.

What if everyone in the group ordered something different?

For an even split, this calculator works well. If contributions varied significantly, it's fairer to calculate each person's own subtotal and tip separately rather than splitting one combined total.

Is tipping mandatory?

This varies by country and situation. Check local norms — in some places a service charge is already included in the bill, making an additional tip optional or unnecessary.
