The discount formula

Final price = Original price × (1 − discount% / 100) Amount saved = Original price − Final price

A discount reduces the original price by a percentage of itself. The math is straightforward, but it's easy to make an error when stacking multiple discounts — two separate 20% discounts do not add up to 40% off.

Stacked discounts explained

If a store applies two discounts in sequence — say 20% off, then an extra 10% off the already-reduced price — the combined effect is 28% off the original, not 30%. Each discount applies to whatever the price is at that point, which is always lower than the very first, original price.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate two discounts applied one after another?

Apply the first discount, then apply the second discount to the resulting price rather than the original. Run this calculator twice, using the first result as the original price for the second calculation.

What if I know the final price and want to find the discount percentage?

Subtract the final price from the original to get the amount saved, then divide that by the original price and multiply by 100 to get the discount percentage.

Does this include sales tax?

No, this calculates the discount only. If tax applies after the discount, use the GST/Sales Tax calculator on the discounted price to find your final total.
